Bargello
Black Mirage
Amber · Parfum · 2023
A dense amber extrait that opens loud and stays loud. Two full wears on skin and one on wool; the projection held a room for the first four hours both times. The saffron-rose middle is the best part. The drydown leans sweet vanilla more than the label admits.
Context
Bargello sells Black Mirage as their entry extrait, a 100 ml bottle at a price that undercuts most of the niche shelf it sits next to. That pricing is the whole reason people pick it up, and it is the reason to be careful with it.
On skin
First thirty minutes: saffron over a rose that reads more jammy than fresh. The heart holds about three hours before amber and vanilla take over. Nine hours in, the woody base was still there on the wrist. On wool it survived two days. Projection is the strong suit; two sprays filled a medium room and stayed noticeable at arm’s length past lunch.
Value
Per millilitre it undercuts Tom Ford and Parfums de Marly by half. Whether the materials match that math is harder to say. The vanilla base has a flat, heavy sweetness, with little of the dry cocoa edge you get from tonka. For the price the ride is still worth it, with the caveat below.
Verdict
Try a decant first. If amber-vanilla loudness is your category, a bottle pays for itself. Everyone else should sample before committing to 100 ml of it.

Before a bottle
Ask for 2 to 10 ml. Wear it three times on your own skin. A blotter will not tell you what hour four smells like.
