Diptyque
Tam Dao
Sandalwood · EDP · 2019 · Daniel Moliere
The reference wearable sandalwood: cypress, sandalwood, cedar. Clean, calm, close to the skin. One of the most worn woody niche scents. Quiet, dry, wood as wood. Longevity is weak and the price per millilitre is high.
Context
Tam Dao is Diptyque’s sandalwood reference, drawn from the perfumer’s memory of sandalwood forests in Vietnam. Cypress and green notes open it. Sandalwood and rose sit in the heart. Cedar and musk close it. The EDP is denser and longer than the old EDT. The perfumer is Daniel Moliere.
On skin
The opening is cypress and green notes, close to pencil shavings. After 20 minutes sandalwood comes forward, clean and calm. Longevity is medium-weak: 5 to 6 hours on skin, 6 to 7 for the EDP. Projection stays close. It works in heat and in the cold. A background scent for people who already know the material.
EDP and EDT
The EDT is lighter, quieter, and gone sooner. The EDP is denser, longer, and more clearly sandalwood. If you buy one, buy the EDP. Even the EDP stays quiet. The point is closeness.
Alternatives
For clean sandalwood: Le Labo Santal 33 (louder, leatherier, more argued over) and Tom Ford Oud Wood (more complex, more expensive). Tam Dao is the plain sandalwood of the three, with no amber and no leather. A decant tells you whether that cleanliness is what you want, and whether the hours are enough.
Verdict
A good expensive neutral for a sandalwood person. Wear a decant. Longevity is weak, and not everyone will pay €210 for 5 hours. Skip it if you need projection or volume. Buy the bottle once a decant has shown you this is the daily you actually wear.

Before a bottle
Ask for 2 to 10 ml. Wear it three times on your own skin. A blotter will not tell you what hour four smells like.
